Nathan Holmes
Nathan Holmes / Voice, Piano, and Guitar
Nathan Holmes, born in Atlanta, Georgia and raised in Decatur, Georgia, is a trained operatic baritone who is a candidate for the Masters of Music in Vocal Performance and Pedagogy in his second year of studies at University of Houston. As a teacher, Nathan has taught piano lessons and voice lessons since 2019 to various age groups, ranging from preschool-aged children through young adults. One review from a parent (quoted from a social media post): “The gift of affirmation. We love Nathan! My son had a hard day at school. [His lesson with Nathan] turned it around.” Nathan has taught all genres of voice - classical, musical theatre, and popular. During his undergraduate studies, he took a collaborative piano course, where he learned accompaniment and sight-reading skills at the keyboard. He also took guitar lessons for five years while he was in high school. He currently studies with Dr. Timothy Jones, and has previously studied with acclaimed soprano, Leah Partridge, as well as Mrs. Marie Jarriel Roberts, with whom he studied during his undergraduate studies at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia.
As a performer with the Moores Opera Center at University of Houston, he has performed roles such as Ludovic (La Belle et La Bête), Kecal (The Bartered Bride), and Fredrik Egerman (A Little Night Music). In the past, he has also performed roles with other companies such as Nathan Detroit (Guys & Dolls), Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Moralès (Carmen), and Giuseppe (The Gondoliers). He has also participated in summer programs such as OperaFest at Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Sewanee, Tennessee in 2022, American Institute of Musical Studies (AIMS) in Graz Austria in 2019, CoOPERAtive Summer Program at Westminster Choir College in 2018, and Harrower Summer Opera Workshop at Georgia State University in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, Nathan advanced to the semi-finals of the Southeastern Regional NATS competition at Florida State University. He currently sings as a staff singer at Chapelwood United Methodist Church. In his free time, he enjoys hiking, watching basketball and volleyball, as well as spending quality time with his friends.
When Mr. Nathan was a kid, he loved playing video games, watching television, watching and playing sports, and playing pretend with his friends. He grew up loving and playing all the Pokémon games and always asked his parents and Santa Claus for the new game as a Christmas present. He also loved collecting Yu-gi-oh cards! His favorite books growing up were Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, and he still loves reading them to this day. His favorite sports growing up were baseball and basketball, but now he loves every sport. His favorite TV show when he was a kid was Spongebob Squarepants and he still remembers all the jokes. In honor of Patrick Star from Spongebob, he sometimes asks his students: “Is mayonnaise an instrument?”
